British Values linked to Colnbrook Values

Promoting British Values at Colnbrook Church of England Primary School

The DfE have reinforced the need “to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.” The Government set out its definition of British values in the 2011 Prevent Strategy.

At Colnbrook these values are reinforced regularly and have strong links with our Christian values. British values are discussed and taught in the following ways:

Democracy

(Links to school values: Responsibility, Respect, Community)

  • Children’s views are represented through the School Council, Worship Leaders and through other processes in the school, such as the writing of our collective School Prayer.
  •  Elections are held for the School Council and Head Boy and Girl, and the children participate fully in the election of their peers to represent them.
  • A specific IPC unit on the democratic process is taught in Year 5/6.
  • Democracy is promoted through PSHE lessons within the IPC.

The Rule of Law

(Links to school values: Respect, Responsibility, Community)

  • Children and staff understand and abide by our behaviour policy and children reflect on their actions when they do not follow these rules.
  •   The understanding of the value of laws and rules comes through the consistent application of our behaviour policy.
  •  We work closely with the local police in our community to build good relationships and to help the children understand the role of the police in their community.
  • We work closely with organisations within our community, for example the Local Parish Council and the Colnbrook Residents' Association. We help with annual litter picking in the community and invite elderly people in our village to our Early Years' Christmas performance.
  •  Class discussions of rights and responsibilities take place at the start of each year and through the year as necessary.
  • Our home school agreement is signed by parents, staff and children and is based on our Christian values.

Individual liberty

(Links to school values: Aspiration, Responsibility)

  • Children are encouraged and taught to take responsibility for their own learning.
  • Children are taught how to keep themselves safe on-line, in school, in the community and in the wider world. Click here for our Pupil Wellbeing page.
  • We use Thinking Skills and CRAVE questions the children’s ability to voice their options and discuss differences.
  •  Individual differences are valued within the school community.

Mutual Respect

(Links to school values: Compassion, Community, Respect)

  • Through our Christian values children are taught to respect everyone.
  • Our Learning Resource Unit for pupils with Special Educational Needs promotes tolerance and acceptance throughout the school.
  •  We are a culturally diverse school that welcomes people from all countries , religious and ethnic backgrounds.
  • The topics covered in our International Primary Curriculum each have an international section where our pupils can share their experiences.

Tolerance of different faiths and beliefs:

(Links to school values: Respect, Community, Compassion)

  • Through our RE curriculum and through Collective Worship the children are taught about other faiths.
  • We celebrate diversity throughout the school.
  • Each topic covered by the International Primary Curriculum recognizes and celebrates diversity.
  • We welcome visitors from a wide range of Christian traditions and other faiths and backgrounds into school.
